USER GROUPS AND MEGADISC
Ed: Here's a few points that arose out of a couple of enquiries from
User Groups lately - I took Ted Hubbard's letter as an opportunity to
make them. I'd appreciate any user group members checking it out, to help
both of us out.

Dear Ed:
Our CLUB is interested in subscribing to your Magazine, as we have
excellent reports from some of our members. Therefore we would like to ask
or distribute it between members, to show members & their friends your
magazine. To see if we can increase your subscriptions from this area.
The members that do subscribe at the moment would like to congratulate you
& your team on the presentation & ease of use of the magazine.
Ted Hubbard
Gympie Amiga Users Group
************************************
Dear Ted:
Your club is welcome to subscribe to Megadisc, and I'm glad that there
have been good reports about it from your members. As a club, you can
subscribe just like any individual, but I'd like to take the opportunity of
answering your query to make a couple of general points about user groups
and Megadisc.
First, Megadisc is not Public domain, it's a commercial product and must
be bought by users, except in the case where the original disk may perhaps
be lent to a friend for purposes of checking it out with an eye to eventual
subscription. But under no cirumstances should it be copied except for
backup purposes of the buyer.
There is a matter of attitude and spirit here too which can't be enforced
- ie, there is little anyone can do to stop people pirating Megadisc or
other commercial software, so I have to rely on the integrity of Amiga
users, a quality some have and others haven't. I (and apparently many
paying customers as well) believe that Megadisc is a unique resource for
end users and as such must be supported if it is to continue providing all
that it does. This support comes down to contributing material (and we get
a lot of good material from our many excellent contributors as a quick look
at this issue will show), and paying for Megadisc and the Public Domain
disks that we make available. Do this and Megadisc will get better each
issue. Steal the disk and eventually you kill it dead, it's as simple as
that.
User Groups as Dealers
I go into this because there are and have been cases of user groups
getting one copy of Megadisc for the club, and that single issue being
copied around the whole club. This is mean-spirited and short-sighted. On
the other hand, there are other User Groups who have supported Megadisc
very well - certain groups come to mind: AUG of WA, Cooma AUG, Bendigo AUG,
NZAUG to name a few. These groups and others have taken advantage of our
DEALERSHIP offer for user groups - ie, a User group can act as a dealer, by
getting 5 or more Megadiscs at dealer price as they are released, and
selling them to members at anything up to the RRP of $17.95. As a service
to members, the price might be $15, for example, giving the member a
discount, but still making a little for the club. This arrangement is
particularly encouraged in areas where there are no Amiga dealers.
So I encourage any User group members reading this to get in touch if you
believe your Group could become a Megadisc dealer - the benefits are
cheaper Megadiscs as they're released, and you'll be helping support a most
unusual publication, ie, totally independent, user driven, no ads, etc.
Tim Strachan
Editor.
